1. “Her skin was not white but a faint green shade, the color of a duck’s egg and of an unusually transparent tegument. Her veins were vivid green and golden, the nails pale blue. She smelled of violets…”
2. “As Diamond Mouth Surprise would discover, a progress from complexity to simplicity would require a non-human world.”
3. “Time and anguish were abolished. The water broke above their heads, and without having experienced any sense of reversal, they ascended in the middle of a pool in a large grotto filled with aqueous light.”
4. “The science we call crystallography was the most esteemed of all sciences in this subterrestrial country… The greatest aesthetic emotion was aroused by those crystals which transgressed most within the limits of probability.”

Joseph Cardinale is the author of The Size of the Universe (FC2, 2010). He grew up in Jamesport, New York and earned an MFA in fiction at UMass Amherst. He lives in Honolulu, where he teaches literature and composition at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
Annie Correal is a writer and reporter based in New York, where she has covered crime and breaking news for El Diario and The New York Times, and contributed radio stories to NPR and WNYC. Her first radio documentary, ‘Kidnap Radio,’ about her father’s kidnapping in Colombia and the radio show her family used to send him messages, aired on This American Life, NPR, and internationally on the CBC and Radio Netherlands. She is currently starting a new story telling radio show in Spanish, Radio Ambulante, and working on her first book.
